Kendra’s phone vibrated and a quick check revealed it was her mother calling. With a sigh, she closed her office door before she answered, already knowing what to expect from the call. “Hi, Mum.”

“Hi, honey. Are you coming home for the crescent moon?”

“I don’t think so. Look, I’d love to see you and Dad but I’m kind of busy with this new case so maybe I could come next moon.”

Her mum chuckled. “You’re such a workaholic. You inherited that from your father. But work isn’t everything. If you put half as much effort into romance as work, you’d have found your mate already.”

The mention of mates made Kendra automatically touch the dragon mark on her hip, the lines of it slightly raised like a scar or birthmark. It had been there ever since she took her first dip into the Crescent Lake at sixteen and held the potential of a fated mate. It should’ve been an assurance but after years of searching for someone she could give her heart to, the failure of the journey had just left her dejected and hopeless.

She twirled one of her pens. “I can make it to dinner but I’m not doing the ritual.”

“That’s alright, I’m just excited to see you.”

Kendra said goodbye to her mum and turned her chair so she could look out of the window behind her. She wasn’t exactly in the mood to drive to Drakefield and Crescent Valley in the middle of the work week but she knew if she skipped too many of them, her mum would start getting antsy.

In a perfect world, she’d be able to return to the city on the same night but she feared her mum wouldn’t let her go that easily. It was better to let Calvin know she needed a moon weekend. It was a little last minute but she didn’t imagine it being an issue. She would hardly be the only person leaving to partake in the crescent moon ritual. Shifters, kin, and humans-in-the-know would all be flocking to the shifter villages surrounding Crescent Lake in the hope of finding their mate.

Her gaze flitted to Alisha’s office, wondering if she would be going too. From the small bits of personal information she’d shared so far, it was clear Alisha came from a dragon family of her own and was fully aware of how those things worked. She didn’t actually know if Alisha was unmated or not. It hadn’t come up but she assumed so considering they slept together and she didn’t remember seeing a mating mark on her.

As curious as Kendra felt, she figured it was better not to breach that topic. It felt like admitting something and they weren’t exactly on good terms at the moment. Besides, if she wanted to be in time for dinner with her parents, she’d have to set off now.

While she gathered her stuff, someone knocked on her door. Kendra looked up, her heart jumping in her throat when she realised it was Alisha.

Kendra gathered a breath before she waved her in.
